Lisa Almeida, Tapestry Artist

Tapestry weaving is a slow and deliberate process. Many hours go into creating each piece you see here. If you enjoy looking at my work half as much as I enjoy creating it, you’ll be a very happy soul.

Tapestry Bags

Each woven bag is one-of-a-kind. The process begins with formulating the design, followed by preparing the loom then actually weaving the bag – over and under each individual warp hundreds of times to bring the design idea to life as a tapestry.

Once the weaving is complete, the tapestry is cut from the loom and the finish work begins; trimming and weaving in yarn end then steaming the fabric to lock the weave. Now the woven fabric is ready to be transformed into a bag.

A complementary fabric is chosen for the lining. It’s made to fit, inserted into the tapestry and the two are handstitched together. In the final step, the strap is constructed and secured to the bag by hand.

From start to finish, each bag takes a least 4 weeks to complete. Please reach out if you’d like to discuss having me weave a bag for you or as a gift for someone special.
